The American Dream 2008 January 01 And to think that the first update of the year would be on the first day of the year! Uh, I hope this one doesn't require much explaining. I'm guessing you already laughed, but now are wondering what made me think of that. We have several Mario characters in stereotypical mexican clothing, trying to jump a fence to what seems to be the Mushroom Kingdom on the other side. But the Toad police, riding their Yoshis, doesn't want this to happen. Sounds pretty random at first, but really is the result of excessive thinking about the Mario universe. Talking with friends can really get you inspired. I was talking earlier today in the #drshnaps chatroom about how I needed something for today's comic, and the people there (namely Jon) started wondering several things about the Mario games. For those of you who have played them, specially the RPG games, you might notice that the Mushroom Kingdom is the most diverse world, in terms of how many different species live there. But one thing that should be noted, is how the Toads seem to be a "dominant race", and the rest are "minority groups". There are villages for Goombas, Koopas and Boos, and you rarely see them on Toad Town. Now, the Toads are everywhere. They rule the place, and the other species are subject to do low-class jobs like delivering letters. That's where the connection with the Immigration reality of the Unites States comes from. And that's what spawned the comic. This comic features a special cameo! Sanchez, the illegal Goomba, a character created by Travis (the same from the previous comic). Oh, by the way, looks like that game wasn't cancelled after all. But there's no plans for being released outside of Japan...
